Special
Railcar Guest
Henry Potter
Many
guests have stories to tell about their railroad experiences and
Henry Potter is no exception. Henry, formerly of Bowling
Green and now of Indianapolis, Indiana, was in town for the all
school reunion of the State Street and High Street school reunions
July 26--28, 2002. A must stop for Henry was the railroad
passenger terminal. As you can see from his cap, his heritage
has roots here with the railroad.
The cap Henry wore has a picture of the Humming Bird L&N engine
and a 25 year service pin adorns his cap. Henry graduated
from the class of 1949 and remembers well the steamers running
the rails through Bowling Green. His grandfather was a porter
on a Pullman car and earned the 25 year service pin that he treasures.
Henry's uncle also worked in the rail yards here in Bowling Green.
As
Henry toured the Pullman car, he told many stories of how he remembered
the railroad and his interest in the industry that his family
was so much a part of.
"During
the days of segregation there was a white and black section in
the depot. The separate sections in the terminal made no
sense to me," because as he put it, "once you were on board, we
were all together anyway." When Henry entered the diner
car though, he stopped and said, "we weren't allowed in here."
A digital camera Henry carried took many pictures of the railcars
so that he could take home wonderful memories of the way he grew
up in Bowling Green with the railroad holding a major place in
his memory.
Although Henry's high school reunion was the main purpose of his
trip to Bowling Green, his visit to the historic railcars was
a big part of his weekend.
Come back and see us soon Henry.
