Power Progress

Getting Ready for Rail Car POWER!

B.G.M.U. completed an on-site planning meeting at the Railcars Friday August 16, 2002 and discussed with our volunteer electrician Jim Lockwood, the plans on getting power to the cars.

Two options were evaluated, one option was to bring power from the Kentucky Street side. The other option is to come from the 6th Street side.  Once power is on site, Jim will be designing and installing a main power distribution system that will have separate br

panels in each car.  BGMU will supply 3 phase power and the plans are to install the distribution system in the center car, the Diner car.  The diner car will present the largest load with the Pine sleeper presenting the second largest load. The Presidential car probably draws less current than either of the other cars.

The task of powering the cars is complicated by the variety of power supply requirements.  Some cars are 32 Volt DC, others 64 Volt DC and there are a variety of conventional power sources needed for powering other systems such as air conditioning blower motors and the electrically operated pneumatic doors on the Pine sleeper car.  The Pine has a 6 Volt DC supply that operates the porter paging button.  A variety AC voltages, 110, 120, 220, 230, and 480 Volt systems are used for various lighting circuits, and motor circuits.

Seeing the BGMU truck on site with Bill Borders, engineer with BGMU, and our Jim Lockwood is a great scene!   This is just the beginning of getting power to the cars.  The approvals for needed from property owners where poles will be set and the approval from the highway department for going over 6th are next on the agenda.    This could take as long a 3 months to complete., so in the mean time a temporary service will be run from the depot building.  This will enable restoration crews to power heavier equipment needed in preparing the exterior of the cars.

Reinforcements arrived! Commissioner Jim Bullington (on the right) arrives at the depot in the rain and demonstrates his multi-tasking capabilities.  Jim Bullington is checking on who owns the property and is contacting the highway department to ,move forward the approval process to go over 6th street.

Thanks to Jim Lockwood and Jim Bullington, the power issues are being made to happen.

Special thanks to everyone at BGMU  for helping to power the rail cars.
